Jacques-Frederic Mugnier Chambolle Musigny 2023

$31499

Mugnier's village Chambolle-Musigny is the gateway to one of Burgundy's most perfume-driven cellars, and it carries the house signature in full: floral, supple, finely-grained Pinot Noir of remarkable transparency. It's drawn from village-level parcels around Chambolle and made with the same gentle, low-intervention hand as the grands crus. The most approachable wine in the lineup, and a benchmark for what village Chambolle can be. Drinkable young, but it'll reward a few years.

"(from two different parcels of vines, one .56 ha parcel located in the premier cru Les Plantes, which was planted in 1968 and the second from a .77 ha holding in the villages-level portion of La Combe d’Orveau, 60% of which is young vines, and the remainder is 40+ year old vines; the split is about 55% La Combe d’Orveau and 45% Les Plantes). An exceptionally pretty, even perfumed, nose combines the essence of red pinot fruit with subtle spice wisps. The super-sleek, delicious and quite punchy middle weight flavors that exude a subtle bead of minerality on the youthfully austere and lingering finish. This could use better depth but more should reasonably develop. In a word, lovely." —Allen Meadows

"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Village is the usual blend of two parcels, including the Premier Cru of Les Plantes. It has an open, transparent nose with light red cherry notes, but it just misses a bit of bandwidth. The palate is medium-bodied with a mushroomy opening. This is lightly spiced with a loose-knit finish. I'm not quite convinced about this." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Village is giving and expressive, offering up notes of raspberries, rose petals, orange zest and spices, followed by a medium-bodied, ample and seamless palate that's soft and approachable." —William Kelley
