Jean Manciat Macon-Charnay Franclieu 2023

$2499

Jean Manciat farms a handful of hectares in Charnay, just outside Macon, and the Franclieu cuvee is the gem of the lineup — a single lieu-dit drawn from his oldest vines on a clay-limestone slope. It's fermented with native yeasts and raised entirely in stainless steel, so what you get is pure, unvarnished Chardonnay: chalk, orchard fruit, white flowers. 2023 came in a touch lower in alcohol than the regular bottling, which only sharpens the focus. This is everyday white Burgundy at its most honest and soul-stirring — the kind of bottle to keep stacked by the case.

More about Jean Manciat

If you're on the hunt for White Burgundy that won't require a second mortgage, all roads eventually lead south to the Mâconnais. For decades, this sunny, rolling landscape has been the go-to spot for approachable French Chardonnay. But there is a catch: the region is dominated by massive cooperative wineries that prioritize volume over character, machine-harvesting huge tracts of land to churn out perfectly fine, if somewhat boring, wine. Jean Manciat is the exact opposite of that industrial machine. He is a fiercely independent artisan who proves just how soulful Mâcon Chardonnay can be when someone actually cares.

Manciat works with old vines in the village of Charnay, farming his plots with deep respect for the local clay and limestone soils. Crucially, he insists on harvesting everything by hand. That might sound like a standard wine detail in many of the wines we write about, but down in the Mâconnais, it is a rare and expensive choice that requires a ton of extra sweat and labor. It ensures that only pristine, unbruised fruit makes it into the cellar, which is the foundational step for creating wines with real clarity and focus.
