More about La Combe Grisard

It is not uncommon for winemakers in California to pay a visit to the ancestral "homelands" of the grapes they farm and make into wine. For Cabernet producers they head to Bordeaux, Syrah goes to Northern Rhone and Pinot Noir specialists of course head to Burgundy. The exchange of ideas between winemakers in different regions can be very useful. And it isn't uncommon that such interchanges have inspired top French winemakers to begin projects in California and Oregon.

But it rarely works the other way. Today we have a rare exception, and it happens to come from one of our good friends and a favorite winemaker here at Flatiron. That person is none other than Eric Railsback, known for his Lieu-Dit line of Loire inspired wines from the Central Coast. But like many former sommeliers Eric is a huge Burgundy fan, and the same is true of his buddy Matt Murphy who makes excellent Pinots and Chardonnay's at Presqu'ile Winery.

Together they hatched a bold plan to source some fruit in Burgundy's famed Cote d'Or to make their own wine. This is a pipe dream of many wine lovers and winemakers, but they had a very helpful connection: they happen to both be good friends with Jeremy Seyss, owner and winemaker at Domaine Dujac. With Jeremy's help they were able to secure some prime fruit from the famed village of Gevrey-Chambertin and voila . . . wine was made!
