Marc Colin et Fils Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Vide-Bourse 2019 [NET]

$17999

Vide-Bourse sits directly below Bâtard-Montrachet, sharing a property line with one of Burgundy's most famous Grand Crus. That proximity shows: the wine consistently delivers more density and gravitas than the typical Chassagne 1er Cru. Marc Colin's parcel was planted in 1985 on deep clay-limestone soils, and the family farms it with a light hand, aging in barrel (around 20% new) for 18 months on fine lees. 2019 was a warm, low-yield vintage that produced wines of real concentration and ripe stone-fruit generosity. This is the family's third release of Vide-Bourse and it slots in just below their Bâtard in scale and presence. A wine to cellar with confidence.

"Riper and mildly exotic aromas feature notes of white peach, dried apricot, melon and citrus confit. The delicious, concentrated and palate drenching flavors brim with dry extract that imparts a seductive texture and buffers the bitter lemon rind-inflected acidity supporting the firm but not austere finale. Vide Bourse rarely drinks well young and thus I would advise holding this excellent effort for at least 5 years first."

"The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vides Bourses 1er Cru is compelling on the bouquet with white chocolaty and shaved almond flakes complementing the orange pith and dessicated orange peel scents. The palate is very well balanced with a saline entry. A fine bead of acidity here and a very compact finish that augur for a Chassagne that will benefit from 3-5 years in the cellar. Great potential." —Neal Martin

"Unwinding in the glass with aromas of peach, vine blossom, white flowers, ripe pears and beeswax, the 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Vide Bourse is medium to full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, with a fleshy core of fruit, lively acids and a long, saline finish. As usual, it's one of the more gourmand wines in the range. Damien Colin reported that his yields were some 30% below average and that the crop ripened rapidly, "even very rapidly." Indeed, having projected a September 15 start, he began picking on September 7. Alcohol levels came in for the most part between 13% and 13.5%, with good phenolic maturity and lower pHs than in 2018. Having learned from a succession of warm vintages, every effort was made to retain freshness: working with cool grapes, minimal bâtonnage and moderate percentages of new oak. And in the vineyards, Colin is backing off rognage, working more flexibly to adapt to the vintage. All this translates to a very fine vintage chez Colin, delivering wines that are more concentrated and more clearly defined by site than the charming, open and expressive 2018s, also revisited here."
