Morey Coffinet Batard Montrachet Grand Cru 2020 [NET]

$49999

Batard-Montrachet is one of the great white Grand Crus of Burgundy, and Domaine Morey-Coffinet's parcel sits just a wall and a road below Domaine Leflaive's holding in this mythical site. Thibault Morey, who now runs the family domaine, took over from his father Michel and converted the six hectares of Chardonnay to certified organic farming in 2018. The 2020 is the warm, dense expression of the cru: full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with the saline-mineral spine that separates Batard from everything below it. Aromas of pear, white peach, pastry cream and acacia open onto a satiny mid-palate, then close on a long, savory finish. A wine to lay down and revisit over the next decade-plus.

"A slightly riper mix features notes of both white and yellow peach, acacia blossom and plenty of exotic spice nuances, and in particular jasmine. The sleek, intense and beautifully precise broad-shouldered flavors deliver stunningly good length on the compact and superbly well-balanced finale. This is presently very, very backward, which is just as well as more depth does need to develop but that shouldn't be an issue if at least some forbearance is exercised. Assuming this stunner of a Bâtard fulfills its potential, the word brilliant comes to mind."

"The 2020 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has turned out beautifully, unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, crisp stone fruit, pastry cream and honeycomb. Full-bodied, ample and layered, it's satiny, concentrated and multidimensional, with lively acids and a long, saline finish. This cuvée is going from strength to strength." —William Kelley
