Nicolas Potel Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Gaudichots 2002

$39999

Les Gaudichots may be the most historically loaded 1er Cru name in Vosne-Romanée. Most of its original 5.95 hectares was absorbed into La Tâche in 1933, leaving only a few discontinuous parcels still bottled under the Gaudichots name — but right next door to the monopole of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Nicolas Potel founded his négoce in 1997 after the death of his father, Gérard Potel of Pousse d'Or, and through those family connections gained barrel access to some of Burgundy's most rarefied addresses. The 2002 vintage is a great Burgundy year for Pinot, and this Vosne 1er Cru is now drinking in its prime mature window.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"(100% new oak; this was destemmed by hand, and vinified with about 20% whole clusters) Bright ruby-red. Cool, highly perfumed aromas of blackberry, black cherry, licorice, smoked meat, leather and game. Sweet black fruit flavors are currently overshadowed by new oak and reduction, but this is concentrated, quite rich and deep, if a bit lacking in finesse. A few months of additional elevage will refine the wine, says Potel." —Stephen Tanzer
