Philipponnat Champagne Extra Brut Grand Blanc 2016

$12999

One hundred percent Chardonnay from Grand and Premier Crus reveals the pure chalk soul of Champagne—ripe Mirabelle plum, apricots, wildflowers, and honey lead to delicate citrus and mineral character on the palate. The 2016 vintage delivered exceptional freshness and minerality. Medium to full-bodied with a pinpoint mousse and layered texture—Extra Brut at its most gourmand and rewarding.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Extra-Brut Grand Blanc is a very pretty, vibrant Champagne. Brisk and energetic, the 2016 sizzles with tension. Crushed rocks, lemon peel, graphite and white pepper all race across the palate. The blend of sites in Trépail, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Vertus and Grauves works quite well. This is a fine edition of the Grand Blanc and a shining example of just how compelling the 2016s can be." —Antonio Galloni

"Crafted exclusively from Chardonnay planted in the communes of Grauves, Chouilly, Trépail, Oger and Vertus, Philipponnat's 2016 Extra-Brut Grand Blanc evokes aromas of brioche, walnuts, pastry, lemon, citrus and spices. Medium to full-bodied, round and layered, it's gourmand and textured with a pinpoint mousse and a long, delicate finish. Disgorged with 4.5 grams per liter dosage in June 2023, it has partly undergone malolactic fermentation." —Yohan Castaing

Wine Spectator

94 points

"A classy version, showing precision balance to the integration of ripe black currant, apricot, golden raisin, slivered almond, toast and smoke notes with a fresh, firm frame of acidity and chalky minerality. There's a lovely viscosity to the creamy mousse, a textural echo on the lasting finish." —Alison Napjus

"This Champagne, from 100% Chardonnay, is crisp and taut. With its citrus aroma, acidity, minerality and white fruits this is a beautifully textured wine. It is balanced and ready to drink now." —Roger Voss

More about Philipponnat

We tend to divide our Champagnes into Growers versus Houses, but there is also an important in-between category that offers a lot of incredibly high-quality Champagne. We call it the Boutique House. It’s a space that’s occupied by Billecart Salmon and Jacquesson. They are technically Houses, but their work is rigorous and artisanal, and done on a much smaller scale than the Houses with the big brand names like Veuve Clicquot. They combine the excellent grape sourcing of a top House, with the refined wine-making of a Grower.

Philipponnat is a leading example of a Boutique House. Many wine lovers are familiar with them because of their Clos des Goisses, one of the most sought-after and treasured Champagnes of all – and which, as it dates back to 1935, was Champagne’s very first single vineyard Champagne!

Like Jacquesson, and several other producers, Philipponnat has enjoyed a quality revolution in the 21st century. In 1999 a new Philipponnat took over (this is still a family domaine), Charles Philipponnat, and he radically upped the winery’s game. He made little innovations here and there – using only the first press juice from his Chardonnay, and extended the aging of his wines in neutral barrels, for example. His wines became more intense and richer, but also fresher. And now the winery's current portfolio is one of the finest in Champagne.
