Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes 2023 [NET]

$25499

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey (always PYCM) became a star for all kinds of reasons, but the headline is a stylistic one: less oak (thanks in part to larger barrels), no lees-stirring, earlier picking, a touch more reduction. Jancis Robinson once described it as 'making Chassagne more like Riesling' - chiseled, precise, expressive over fat. He's also been a longtime champion of Burgundy's so-called lesser terroirs, but Les Chenevottes is no small thing: an elegant Chassagne 1er Cru at the northern end of the commune, sharing the limestone and clay character of the great hill of Montrachet just to its south. In PYCM's hands, it shows the lift and clarity that have persuaded the rest of white Burgundy to follow him.

"85% from Chenevottes proper and the balance from Les Bondues. Once again there is a pronounced floral character to the aromas of citrus confit and poached pear. There is almost painful intensity to the super-sleek, focused and chiseled flavors that terminate and linear and overtly austere finale that is presently fairly lean. My projected range assumes that this will progressively flesh out but if your preference is for younger whites, this might be too lean for some palates." —Allen Meadows

"The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Chenevottes 1er Cru has a slightly reductive bouquet but there is fine concentration coiled up here. The palate is well balanced with clementine and nectarine notes and fresh acidity, but perhaps it doesn't quite "kick on" like other cuvées—possibly due to that hail damage?" —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes has also turned out beautifully, offering up a gently reductive bouquet of crisp orchard fruit, toasted almonds, white flowers and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it's racy and pure, with a layered, complete profile." —William Kelley

More about Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey became a star for all kinds of reasons.

Partly, it was because he was an early master of a style of white Burgundy that has now become very popular: less oaky (thanks in part to larger barrels), no lees-stirring, earlier picked, a bit more reductive. The aim is not to make the fat wines that were still popular when he was starting out, but rather expressive wines that were chiseled and precise. His wines do all of this so well that he persuaded the rest of us to go along for the ride.

He also became a star because of critical acclaim, and it was the right kind of critical acclaim for the moment. Way back in 2008 Jancis Robinson wrote up PYCM and headlined it: “Making Chassagne more like Riesling”, capturing the style of these wines perfectly. Only Jancis could make a star of Klaus-Peter Keller by comparing his Rieslings to white Burgundy and a star of PYCM by comparing his white Burgundies to Riesling!

But we think he also became a star for a reason that some may overlook: he has long been a champion of Burgundy’s so-called lesser terroirs, and he has been able to make from them incredible wines that can reach a larger audience.

Tasting Profile

Medium to full-bodied and chiseled: lemon zest, white peach, crushed oyster shell, a flinty matchstick lift. Precise, mineral, and long; rewards a few years in the cellar.
