Piquentum Teran 2021

$2999

This wine has the remarkable ability to be incredibly fragrant and coat the inside of the glass like syrup, while still being a light bodied, low alcohol wine with acidity built for the Istrski pršut (Istrian Prosciutto) that hangs from the ceiling of the winery. Primary and malolactic fermentation are completely with native yeasts. While Teran is in the Refosco (& Refošk) family, it differs in that it has slightly higher acidity and pronounced iron and sanguine flavors. Historically, Teran was given to woman after childbirth to combat anemia due to the rich iron content.

More about Piquentum

Wine itself does not care about international borders. Nowhere makes that clearer than Istria, just over the ridge from Friuli. For most of living memory there wasn’t a hard line here at all; the hills, the markets, the kitchens—and yes, the cellars—have always been in close contact.

So when Gravner and Radikon reignited the idea of skin-fermented whites in Oslavia, it slipped easily across the ridge. In Istria, that know-how found new raw materials: local grapes, different soils, a slightly different rhythm. The result isn’t a copy of Friuli, in the same way that the Californian burrito isn’t – and doesn’t try to be – a straight copy of what you get in Mexico.

Piquentum is a perfect example. Dimitri Brečević works in a cool, old concrete water tank dug into the hillside. He ferments slow and handles gently. He’s a low-intervention wine-maker not to put something on the label, but because the wines taste better that way.

Istria was once considered one the greatest sources for food and wine in the Mediterranean. After years of communist role, we finally may be seeing the peninsula return to its natural splendor.
