Salvatore Molettieri Taurasi Vigna Cinque Querce 2007

$4999

A 2007 Taurasi with nearly two decades of bottle age—from one of Campania's benchmark Aglianico producers. Salvatore Molettieri's family cultivated Aglianico in Montemarano for over a century before he began bottling in 1988, driven by necessity when the post-earthquake grape market collapsed. The Vigna Cinque Querce vineyard sits at 500–550 meters on clay-limestone soils. Aged 48 months in a combination of large oak casks and French barriques. At this age, the wine has shed its youthful austerity and entered a window of complex, evolved drinking.

"The 2007 Taurasi Vigna Cinque Querce is sitting pretty in its drinking window, boasting a seductive display of black cherries in an air of exotic spice and crushed stone with lifting hints of sage and menthol. It’s soft and enveloping yet pure and precise, with dried red berries contrasted by sour citrus and nervous acidity. Rosy inner florals linger through the long and wonderfully fresh finale, with only hints of fine tannin that frame the experience nicely. Make sure to give the 2007 some time open-in-bottle, or decanter to fully express itself." —Eric Guido

"At 15 years of age, there’s barely a whiff of evolution in a wine made from vines in Montemarano on calcareous clay soils at 550m, whose fine fragrance is followed by a delicious black cherry fruitiness etched with an incisive, almost saline acidity. The altitude and soils, combined with ageing for up to 60 months in barrel for a remarkable roundness of texture, appear to be the keys to its gradual evolution, showing the potential of Aglianico to age well when the primary fruit is as good as this."

"Wild underbrush and exotic spice notes mark the racy black cherry puree and cassis fruit in this rich red, delivering full tannins and a long aftertaste of wild flowers, mineral and spice."
