Shelter Winery Baden Pinot Noir Lovely Lilly 2022

Hans-Bert Espe and Silke Wolf made their first wines in a bunker on an abandoned Canadian air force airfield in Baden. Hence the name. Two decades on they are among Germany's most convincing Pinot Noir producers, farming limestone-rich sites around Kenzingen and Malterdingen without herbicides or pesticides. Lovely Lilly, named for the family dog, is the joyful entry point: hand-harvested, mostly destemmed, given a short cold soak and a gentle press. It is light on its feet and built on crunchy red fruit rather than weight or oak. German Pinot at its most disarming. Chill it lightly and do not overthink it.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Germany’s Baden region is home to some of the county’s most outstanding Pinot Noir. Stop snickering at the back of the class: this is not damning by faint praise!

True, Baden doesn't compete with Burgundy or the Sonoma Coast. But it is one of the world’s great homes to Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder, or "late Burgundy," as they call it). Especially up north, where the climate is cool but the Vosges Mountains shelter the vineyards from the cold, wet, continental winds.

Throw in limestone and loess soils and it's no wonder the best small producers can turn out Pinot Noirs of elegance, minerality and deft balance.

Shelter is a great, small producer. Husband and wife team, Hans-Bert and Silke Wolf, farm about four hectares up in that great North-Baden neighborhood.

Their vineyard and cellar work is naturally uncomplicated. No herbicides or pesticides. They hand-harvest their fruit, mostly (but maybe not always) destem it before a a short cold soak and a delicate press. They ferment in open-top vessels, and then transferred into almost entirely barrel, done. Classic, perfect Pinot Noir.
