Simon Colin Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers 2022 [NET]

$11499

Simon Colin is one of the most exciting young names in Chassagne-Montrachet. He's the son of Philippe Colin and nephew of Bruno (yes, that Colin family), and he set up his own domaine after years training in the family cellars. The wines are precise, energetic, and unmistakably from the new generation of Côte de Beaune whites. Les Vergers is a Chassagne 1er Cru sitting just below the great climats on the slope, on stony limestone soils that give richness without weight. Colin farms three small parcels here, raises the wine in barrel with a measured hand on new oak, and turns out a Vergers that's broad-shouldered, ripe and mineral in equal measure.

"From 2 parcels in Les Vergers proper and another in Pasquelles. A cooler and more restrained nose is comprised by notes of mineral reduction, lemon zest and a floral top note. The sleeker if not denser middleweight flavors also possess a lovely sense of tension and vibrancy that carries over to the stonier and youthfully austere well-balanced finish. This too could use better depth so I would suggest planning to cellar it for at least a few years first. Worth considering."

"The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers 1er Cru has a slightly chalky bouquet with hints of linseed and walnut in the background. Backward initially, it soon "warms up" in the glass. The palate is very well-balanced with a smooth, slightly creamy texture counterbalancing acidity, keeping this on its toes. There's still a patina of new oak to be subsumed (20%), so afford this a couple of years in bottle." —Neal Martin

"Colin farms three parcels of Les Vergers that total 0.70 hectares. The vines are down the slope from Les Chaumées on slightly flatter land. The result is richer than either of the cuvées of Les Chaumées; it avoids heaviness, but it is almost tropical with a ripe pear and passionfruit aroma and suggestion of fresh butter that comes out on the palate. There is a well-balanced richness here and a rewardingly long finish."
