St. Innocent Yamhill-Carlton Pinot Noir Shea Vineyards 2019

$7999

Shea is one of Oregon's great vineyard names, and St. Innocent has been bottling it since 1998, long enough to know exactly what the site wants. It sits in the Yamhill-Carlton foothills on shallow, quick-draining ancient marine soil, which tends to give Pinot Noir darker fruit and a firmer frame than the valley's volcanic sites. This one already has several years in bottle, so the hard edges have softened and the earthy, savory register has arrived, which is the stage where good Willamette Pinot gets genuinely interesting. Mark Vlossak's style has always favored structure and patience over immediate charm. That patience has now been paid forward to you.

Antonio Galloni

"Depths of crushed ashen stones and grilled herbs give way to zests of tangerine and sour cherry as the 2019 Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard comes to life in the glass. This is silky-smooth, but it steps lightly, seeming to hover across the palate with ripe wild berry fruits neatly and a hint of inner cedar. Minty herbal tones resonate with a note of cocoa as the 2019 finishes long, juicy and wickedly fresh. It's almost impossible to stop at just one glass." —Eric Guido

"Very pale garnet, the 2019 Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard has sour cherries, woodsmoke and earth aromas on the nose. The palate is light-bodied, soft, juicy and somewhat dilute with a short finish." —Erin Brooks

"A really intriguing mix of red fruit and tangerines highlight an aromatic set that also features touches of leather and loamy soil. All the raspberry flavor you can handle is on tap, along with tastes of smoked almonds and citrus. The wine's juicy acidity is matched by significant tannic structure. Drink now–2034." —Michael Alberty
