Sylvain Cathiard Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2014 [NET]

$69999

The 2014 vintage is what classical Burgundy is supposed to feel like: medium-weight, energetic, perfectly balanced, with the kind of cool-vintage detail that flatters a great terroir without overwhelming it. Cathiard's Malconsorts sits in the upper-middle section of the climat, on deep red clay directly adjacent to La Tâche — a Grand Cru in everything but classification. Sébastien Cathiard's hand here is precise and minimal: strict destemming, gentle extraction, restrained oak. A textbook example of what Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru can be when the vintage cooperates and the address is this good.

"A super-fresh and exceptionally cool nose of mostly red berry fruit scents possesses and impressively broad range of spice elements. There is first-rate vibrancy to the big, intense, powerful and muscular flavors that are almost pungently mineral-driven. As is usually the case with this wine chez Cathiard, it is robust and exceptionally firm yet there is nothing aggressive about the structure on the ripe and hugely long finale where a hint of bitter cherry pit arises. As the description would suggest however, it is pointless to open one of these beauties before it has at least 10 years of age." —Allen Meadows

"Bright medium red, a bit less deep than the preceding wines. Sexy leesy wildness to the aromas of black raspberry, blackcurrant and minerals. At once sweet and savory, showing excellent chewy depth for the 2015 vintage, and an impression of concentration that belies the yield of 48 hectoliters per hectare. In a distinctly black fruit style, conveying terrific inner-mouth lift and energy to its flavors of blueberry, cassis and minerals. The ripe tannins saturate the entire mouth on the back end, with saline minerality drawing out the finishing fruit. This is showing more personality today than the Murgers and may provide pleasure earlier, but it has the structure for a 20-year life in bottle." —Stephen Tanzer

"The 2014 Vosne Romanée 1Er Cru les Malconsorts has a very cerebral bouquet, beautifully defined and the fruit here is very enmeshed with the oak. There is something more tertiary -- wild woodland, wild mushroom even tincturing the red and black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, not as powerful as Cathiard's other 2014 Premier Crus, but with the finest precision on the finish. Its persistence is awe-inspiring." —Neal Martin

More about Sylvain Cathiard

Cathiard is a tiny domain - there never is very much wine. You enter a spick and span white stucco suburban home in the center of the small village of Vosne Romanee. There is a walled vineyard outside the front door. Go down the staircase and you are in a minuscule cuverie and barrel room. Not a lot of barrels here either. No wonder the wine is sold in 6 bottle cases.

Sebastien Cathiard has been slowly assuming control of this top estate in Vosne-Romanée from his father Sylvain. He is now fully in charge, but the wines have been so good for so long that he wisely has changed very little. They continue to farm meticulously, de-stem and rigorously sort all the fruit prior to fermentation. The only thing he has changed is the gradual reduction of new oak, seeking a bit more purity of terroir expression.
