Thomas-Collardot Puligny-Montrachet Les Climats 2023

A village Puligny that quietly includes fruit from the domaine's premier cru holdings — including Les Folatières and Hameau de Blagny — which is about as generous as Puligny gets. Les Climats is assembled from eight parcels in all: Houlières, Derrière la Velle, Au Paupillot, Rue aux Vaches, Les Nosroyes, Les Enseignères, Hameau de Blagny and Les Folatières, all Chardonnay on clay-limestone. The domaine is small and recently reclaimed: Jacqueline Collardot took her family's 2.5 hectares back in hand in 2010 after they had been leased out for nearly two decades, made her first vintage in 2015, and was joined by her son Matthieu in 2018. Everything here gets the same treatment regardless of pedigree — a slow four-hour press, native-yeast fermentation in 350-liter barrels, ten to twelve months on lees, then a few months assembling in stainless steel. It is the best single introduction to what this family does.

"Pretty aromas of white flowers, citrus confit, apple, passion fruit and exotic tea are complemented by medium weight flavors that are not quite as dense though they are finer and with more evident minerality on the balanced, firm and age worthy finale. This is lovely and worth considering. Note: this used to be a blend of all of the domaine's vineyards and hence the name; now however the two 1ers have been removed and as such, it is a blend of 6 villages-level lieux-dits." —Allen Meadows

More about Thomas-Collardot

Where do new Burgundy domaines come from? Sometimes from colossal financing. Sometimes from families regaining control of vineyards that have been leased out in sharecrop deals for many years. This is the latter.

Domaine Thomas-Collardot was founded in 2015 with one wine by Jaqueline Collardot and her son Matthieu. The family is slowly taking back vineyards that have been leased out in one form or another since 1991. They now have about 2.5 hectares.

The winemaking style is pure and clean with very little new wood used, up to about 30%. No set recipe. In 2010 Jacqueline's father retired and she inherited the vineyards, Domaine Thomas Pierre. She favors a very slow elevage on the lees for two winters. Bottles in March aligned with the proper moon phase. They intend to get organic certification. The sole premier cru is plowed by horse. This is a domaine utilizing the best old and new techniques.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Halibut with beurre blanc, a gratin of chard and cream, chicken pot pie, or crab salad with lemon and chives. Also very good with a plate of hard alpine cheeses.

Tasting Profile

An expressive nose of fresh orchard fruit, lemon and white flowers. Dry and medium-bodied, with a gentle creaminess from the lees offset by firm citrus acidity. Lightly stony on the finish, which lingers well past the swallow.
