Thomas-Labaille Sancerre Chavignol Les Monts Damnes 2023

$4699

Les Monts Damnes — the 'damned mountains' — is the steepest, most punishing hillside in Chavignol, and quite possibly the greatest single site in all of Sancerre. The Kimmeridgian marl here is the same rock that gives Chablis its bones, and the slope is so sharp that everything must be worked by hand. Thomas-Labaille selects the best lots from their old vines on this legendary cru, ferments with native yeasts, ages in 600-liter foudres, and bottles unfiltered. This is Sancerre at its most profound — a wine built for the cellar.

More about Thomas-Labaille

As you pull up to Domaine Thomas-Labaille, in the heart of Chavignol, the steep slopes of Les Monts Damnées appear overhead. The wines are refreshing, very dry, and while each one is distinct they all seem to carry a breath of the cool air from the slopes outside. And if you're lucky enough to be there on a day when Claude opens an older bottle you'll see something amazing: these seemingly bright, fresh wines age into something even deeper and more expressive.

Claude wants to make wines that are light and bright enough to drink like a bistro wine in their youth, crackling and mineral, complexity, and honesty, but never overwhelming. But he is also looking to make wines that offer more than a passing nod at their terroir, wines that can open up with air to reveal levels of flavor, and that can age into more and more profound expressions of Chavignol's terroir.
