Vietti Barolo Brunate 2020 [NET]

$25999

From the producer: intense ruby-red color. The nose is explosive, powerful and wide-ranging. Fruity notes of plum, citrusy hints of cedar, grapefruit and spices emerge. After a few minutes in the glass, notes of violet flower—typical of the Brunate terroir—emerge. On the palate, it is intense and full-bodied. The soft, rounded and velvety tannins are typical of the La Morra area. The finish reveals a hint of liquorice root.

Robert Parker

95 points

"The Vietti 2020 Barolo Brunate has a dark and spicy side that is infused throughout the fruit. Dark cherry and blackcurrant are folded into ferrous earth, grilled rosemary, aniseed and a hint of fresh mint. Brunate tends to be quite austere and firm in terms of its aromas, and this vintage shows those qualities well. In fact, the character of the site comes through clearly. The wine has a precise, angular personality, and the fruit feels compact." —Robert Parker

Wine Enthusiast

95 points

"This Barolo from the renowned Brunate cru captivates with its youthful energy, showcasing a vibrant bouquet of tart sour cherries, unripe raspberries and an enticing medley of medicinal herbs. On the palate, a classic structure emerges, framed by firm, finegrained tannins that support the wine’s delicate red fruit flavors, subtle earthiness and hints of dried rose petals. With its polished elegance, this Barolo is poised to develop even greater complexity over time."

More about Vietti

One of the great names from Barolo, Vietti has been a pioneering force in Piedmont for decades, going back to the 1961 Rocche, one of the first single-vineyard designated bottles ever. The Rocche, and other single Cru wines from outside Castiglione, are among the most sought-after Barolo being made today.

Vietti also makes a Barolo normale called Castiglione, which confusingly is made mostly with fruit from Ravera, in the village of Novello, rather than Castiglione. It’s a good wine to stock up on just about every vintage. The style at Vietti is neither particularly traditional or particularly modern: a down-the-middle approach that is focused primarily on quality and terroir expression.
