Voliero Brunello di Montalcino 2019

$6999

Voliero's high-altitude vineyard rewards ambition with silky, enveloping power and breathless energy. Mentholated freshness introduces crushed cherries, mint, clove, and dusty roses—a bouquet of primary concentration that carries through the palate with crunchy red berries and saline spice. The wine finishes with edgy tannins and vibrant acidity, leaving tart cranberry notes as the final word. 2019's rich character channeled through mountain-grown precision.

"A mentholated freshness introduces the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino, as a vibrant wave of crushed cherries, mint leaf, clove and dusty roses make up its absolutely gorgeous bouquet. This is silky and enveloping yet lifted and full of energy, with crunchy red berry fruits that leave a crackle of primary concentration toward the close. It finishes pretty saline and spicy in character, leaving edgy tannins to mingle with a residual bump of acidity that maintains a wonderfully fresh sensation as tart cranberry notes fade. This is one of the most exciting young renditions of Voliero I have ever tasted. It captivates with its precision and spry personality while holding depths of complexity in reserve. Wow." —Eric Guido

Robert Parker

"The Voliero 2019 Brunello di Montalcino has ripe cherry fruit and blackberry, with soft and ripe layering throughout. This wine shows the rich and plump side of 2019, a vintage that offers more concentration than average. Dark fruit flavors cede to spice, earth and toasted chestnut husk. This wine shows solid, chalky tannins. Some 7,600 bottles (and larger formats) were made, and they're almost ready straight out of the gate." —Monica Larner

"The nose features savory aromas of earth, tar, gunpowder, balsamic, herbs, leather and black cherry. Sweet strawberries and cherries on the palate are light and bright, while flexible tannins provide structure to an overall umami feel."

"You'll find balsamic aromas recalling camphor that mingle with leather and forest floor on the 2019 Brunello from Voliero. Linear and full-bodied, the palate offers prune accented by licorice, coffee bean and dried sage. Tight knit, close-grained tannins provide firm support. Drink 2027–2032. Abv: 14.5%" —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Voliero

Ciacci was a pioneer in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, a village just to the southeast of the DOCG’s traditional home in Montalcino. It’s a village with such a distinctive soil type that they had to come up with a new name for it: “Castelnuovo marl”. A river that passes through the village keeps the vineyards a touch cooler — very important for a DOCG that is constantly battling with the heat.

So it was that in this corner of the DOCG a new style of Brunello developed. Poggio di Soto is the most famous example, with Ciacci di Piccolomini not far behind. And it is here that we find Uccelleria, a winery with vineyards just uphill from Ciacci, where the salt-of-the-earth Tuscan Andrea Cortonosi produces his flagship wine.

People kept asking Andrea to sell his wine, but he just didn’t have enough to go around. Purchasing more land to add to production must have been tempting, but he was worried that this would dilute the very precise personality of Uccelleria — essentially, a polished somewhat modern take on Castelnuovo dell’Abate Brunello. So he built an entirely new winery.

That winery is Voliero, and the contrast with Uccelleria couldn’t be sharper. While Uccelleria is planted higher than Ciacci, Voliero goes even higher — another 200 meters up the hill. This makes a big difference! Voliero also benefits from the contribution of grapes from Sant’Angelo, another high altitude vineyard.

In the winery, there are few of the modern touches that you find at Uccelleria. Fermentations are long and cold. Aging is solely in giant casks.

All of this results in wines that are nervier and edgier than classic Castelnuovo, while still possessing all its elegance and refinement. There is more sour cherry here and fewer notes of dark chocolate. There is decidedly more freshness.
