Chartogne-Taillet Cuvée Sainte Anne: “One of the best”

The NV Brut Cuvée Ste.-Anne is one of the best Champagnes readers will find in its price range, or any price range, for that matter.

- Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Alexandre Chartogne has been one of the brightest stars of the Grower Champagne movement. From the small village of Merfy in a forgotten northern corner of the Montagne de Reims, he has spent his entire professional life unlocking the secrets of his home terroir.

He wasn’t the first to do this! Merfy has a history that is positively Burgundian. Benedictine monks had an abbey there, and like the best of Burgundy, these monks – as far back as the 700's! – spent multiple generations growing vines in the village’s terroirs, mapping out Cru names that have lasted to this day.

But Alexandre makes wines very different than what the monks produced, and not just because Champagne now contains sparkles. Experimentation is key for Alexandre, and he is continuously questioning the status quo. From farming methods, vessels for maturation, time on the lees and dosage, nothing is taken for granted.

And it works! Chartogne-Taillet's Sainte Anne is always at the top of our list of Champagnes showcasing a rounder, Pinot-dominant profile. This blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is fermented in a mix of stainless steel and neutral barrels, and then ages for two years on the lees.

As Antonio Galloni suggests in his quote above, it doesn’t get much better than this from Champagne. Enjoy it while we still have limited quantities in stock.
