Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2020 [NET]

$22499

Les Caillerets lies just below Le Montrachet itself, and many Burgundy lovers consider it the finest white Premier Cru in Chassagne. The name comes from the small stones that pepper the soil — the source of the wine's signature tension. Where Grandes Ruchottes gives more flesh and power, Caillerets goes mineral and chiseled: citrus oil, beeswax, warm bread, ripe pear, all riding a chalky, incisive spine. Bernard Moreau farms a beautiful old parcel here, and 2020 brought the wine real depth and dimension. Classical Chassagne at its most complete.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has quite a primal grapefruit and crushed stone scented bouquet that takes time to unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with orange rind and citrus peel, quite spicy, especially towards the finish with touches of stem ginger. One of Moreau’s finest articulations in terroir in 2020." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

95 points

"Exhibiting notions of citrus zest, white flowers, crisp green orchard fruit, beeswax and struck match, the 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets is medium to full-bodied, satiny and inactive, with tangy acids and a long, penetrating finish. The result of an exchange of grapes, it's a terrific effort." —William Kelley

"Lots of crisp acidity and a much drier finish than most of these 2020s. Correct and fresh with real ambition – and so different from the village wine!" —Jancis Robinson

More about Bernard Moreau et Fils

Domaine Bernard Moreau has always been a great producer: superb vineyards, great farming, and careful work in the cellar. It is difficult and painstaking work to improve something that is already near its best. Throughout their long tenure Alex and Benoît Moreau have continued to make tiny improvements year after year, vintage after vintage. Their dedication has paid off and they have reached the top tier of white Burgundy producers. I think of them as the Roulot of Chassagne in terms of leanness, minerality, and letting terroir speak.

Alex and Benoît have been in total control of the domaine since 1999, after completing formal studies and long apprenticeships abroad. Alex is the winemaker, Benoît concentrates on the farming, and they both work on the now extended élevage. These two have reinvigorated their two hundred-year-old family property, the wines are better than they ever have been.
