Domaine de Montille Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Malconsorts Cuvee Christiane 2018 [NET]

$44999

The flagship red of the house, the Cuvee Christiane comes from a parcel within Les Malconsorts that sits across a path from the rest of the climat, bordered on the north and west by La Tache itself. The vines, planted in 1953, are among the oldest in Vosne, and Etienne bottles this fruit separately as a tribute to his late mother. The 2018 is warm and opulent, a generous vintage filtered through Etienne's pure modern style with roughly two-thirds whole cluster and 60% new oak. Dense, dark-fruited and still tightly coiled, this is a profoundly age-worthy bottle that has decades ahead of it. Hold five to ten years for the tannins to really integrate. Drink 2030 through 2050.

"The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 1er Cru contains two-thirds whole cluster but a little more new oak than the regular cuvée (as a reminder, it comes from the parcel that lies adjacent to La Tâche). It has a little more definition and darker fruit on the nose, developing more floral scents with aeration. This is very impressive. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, focused and harmonious, with gentle grip toward the chalky-textured finish. It will require several years in bottle." —Neal Martin

"Aromas of dark berry fruit and plums mingling with aromas of smoked tea, black truffles, loamy soil and Indian spices in a complex bouquet introduce the 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christianne, a full-bodied, layered and multidimensional wine that's rich, concentrated and textural, its powdery structuring tannins cloaked in an ample core of fruit. Brian Sieve told me that this cuvée has the highest pH in the cellar and finished up with a modest 13.3% alcohol." —William Kelley

More about Domaine de Montille

The 17th Century Chateau named for this world-famous Chardonnay producing village has changed hands many times during its history. In 2001 the owners hired Etienne de Montille, son of famous Côte-de-Beaune wine maker Hubert Montille, to take over farming and production. He immediately instituted changes in the vineyards and cellar and began turning "good" wines in to great ones.

In 2012 Etienne and his sister Alix (a star winemaker too) purchased the property so it is now officially in the Montille Family of wines. It's a perfect marriage of an iconic estate to a renowned and highly pedigreed family domaine. Indeed the name "Montille" is itself an iconic brand in Burgundy now.

Why? What’s so great about the de Montille wines? Everything. Attention to every detail: in the farming, the winemaking, even the corks they use. They are biodynamic, which works particularly well in a clos with no neighbors to spray chemicals on nearby rows. They harvest by hand, age in a mix of woods, and manage to make all the tiny little choices that individually are hard to identify as so important but that, aggregated, are what make great wines great.
