Domaine des Comtes Lafon Monthelie 1er Cru Les Duresses 2023

$9999

Lafon may be famous for white Burgundy, but Dominique's reds are no afterthought — and Monthelie's Les Duresses is one of the best-kept secrets in the lineup. Monthelie sits in the hills just above Volnay and Meursault, and Les Duresses is its most celebrated 1er Cru: a south-facing slope that yields Pinot of real perfume and energy. Under Lafon's biodynamic hand, the 2023 is fragrant, supple, and built for the medium term. A red Burgundy with serious pedigree and a still-reasonable address.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Monthélie Les Duresses has an attractive bouquet with slightly darker fruit than its peers—nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with raspberry and cranberry fruit and a touch of Earl Grey toward the spicy finish. Give it a year once in bottle." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"Aromas of plums, berries and smoke introduce the 2023 Monthélie Les Duresses, a medium-bodied, supple and racy wine that's fine-boned and open-knit this year." —William Kelley

More about Domaine des Comtes Lafon

I remember tasting with Dominique Lafon about 30 years ago in the very cold cellars below Clos de la Barre. We had the reds first, which is Burgundian tradition. Dominique commented that he was having a great time making the red wines and that he thought his reds were getting really good. I had to agree.

He has now retired from Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Lea is the winemaker and Pierre is running the business. Which means Dominique will undoubtedly be spending more time on his wholly owned negociant project. I look forward to drinking the Volnay 1er Cru les Lurets on New Year's Eve 2030!

The négociant wines have taken a big step up with the stunning 2022 and 2023 vintages. The future is looking bright chez Lafon.
