Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 2023

$13999

Your way into the Lafon Volnay style without committing to a 1er Cru. Dominique Lafon may be world-famous for his Meursaults, but he has Burgundy in his blood, and the family's Volnay reds are equally serious. The village bottling is sourced from parcels throughout the appellation and is made with the same attention as the crus — destemmed or partially whole-cluster depending on vintage, gentle extraction, and long aging in barrel. 2023 is a vintage of lift and red-fruited charm. Drink over the next decade.

"From young vines in Santenots. A more suffused nose speaks of ripe fruit that derives more from the red side of the spectrum while displaying notes of exotic tea and a touch of newly turned earth. The racy, detailed and refined medium weight flavors possess a lovely texture, if only average density, before terminating in a dusty, moderately austere and balanced finale. This robust effort will require at least a few years of keeping before it will be ready for prime time."

"The 2023 Volnay Village, which comes from the young vines in Santenots, has a lively and fresh bouquet with scents of redcurrant, cranberry and slightly earthy notes, opening nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. Like the Pommard, this is easy-drinking without huge grip, yet there is elegance and charm toward the friendly, peppery finish." —Neal Martin

"From "young" vines in Les Santenots (planted in 2002 and 2015), the 2023 Volnay Village exhibits aromas of plums and minty berries, followed by a supple, medium-bodied palate that's open-knit and charming." —William Kelley

"This lovely Volnay has a secret – it is produced from grapes in Meursault. Lafon is the largest landowner in Volnay Santenots, and this wine is from the young vines of that vineyard. The wine offers a fresh raspberry and plum fruit character with hints of lavender and spice. The texture is supple and approachable; there is less intensity than in the Santenots, but one finds a youthful vigour and charm instead. The grapes here are destemmed and gently fermented before ageing in cask, one-third new."

More about Domaine des Comtes Lafon

I remember tasting with Dominique Lafon about 30 years ago in the very cold cellars below Clos de la Barre. We had the reds first, which is Burgundian tradition. Dominique commented that he was having a great time making the red wines and that he thought his reds were getting really good. I had to agree.

He has now retired from Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Lea is the winemaker and Pierre is running the business. Which means Dominique will undoubtedly be spending more time on his wholly owned negociant project. I look forward to drinking the Volnay 1er Cru les Lurets on New Year's Eve 2030!

The négociant wines have taken a big step up with the stunning 2022 and 2023 vintages. The future is looking bright chez Lafon.
