Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots du Milieu 2023

$22999

A quirk of Burgundy law: Les Santenots du Milieu sits physically in the commune of Meursault, but when planted to Pinot Noir it is classified as Volnay 1er Cru — and this site is Lafon's classic red, sourced from iron-rich soils that give the wine its dark fruit and savory depth. Dominique Lafon's biodynamic farming and unhurried élevage shape a Volnay that's structured but never austere, the kind of red that ages gracefully for two decades or more. One of the most distinguished addresses for Volnay 1er Cru in the Côte de Beaune.

"From a huge 3.78 ha holding of 40+ year old vines planted in shallow, high clay content soil sitting above a bed of solid limestone. This is aromatically similar to the Champans though just a smidgeon riper and with more spice elements. The super-sleek, intense and muscular flavors aren't as refined though they offer more size and weight as well as power on the more structured finale. This is almost old school in style and a wine that's going to require extended patience, though to be fair, a competent Santenots always requires extended patience."

"The 2023 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu has another very delineated, quite floral bouquet that is cut from a similar cloth to the Champans, with just a touch of violet emerging with time in the glass. More powerful than the other Volnays, the palate is well balanced, with great depth and white pepper/graphite notes toward the very persistent finish. This is a Volnay Santenots with well-placed ambition, much more elegant than vintages 10 or 20 years ago." —Neal Martin

"The 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots-du-Milieu is the most textural and concentrated of Lafon's reds this year, wafting from the glass with notes of dark berries, vine smoke and spices, framed by a deft touch of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, layered and satiny, with a fleshy core of fruit framed by sweet tannins, it will offer a broad drinking window." —William Kelley

"Lafon's Santenots is a reference for the appellation in each vintage; 2023 is no exception. It offers a ripe, forward blackberry and blueberry fruit character with earth, smoke and spice notes. The texture is substantial, with firm tannins and abundant extract, but there is nothing heavy or astringent here. Although Pierre Lafon has begun to experiment with whole clusters in the ferment, there was none in any wine this vintage. This wine was racked after harvest 2024 and will be bottled in the spring."

More about Domaine des Comtes Lafon

I remember tasting with Dominique Lafon about 30 years ago in the very cold cellars below Clos de la Barre. We had the reds first, which is Burgundian tradition. Dominique commented that he was having a great time making the red wines and that he thought his reds were getting really good. I had to agree.

He has now retired from Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Lea is the winemaker and Pierre is running the business. Which means Dominique will undoubtedly be spending more time on his wholly owned negociant project. I look forward to drinking the Volnay 1er Cru les Lurets on New Year's Eve 2030!

The négociant wines have taken a big step up with the stunning 2022 and 2023 vintages. The future is looking bright chez Lafon.
