"The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chaffots 1er Cru was acutely impacted by the frost so there are just 2.5 barrels. This has a more tertiary nose, hints of white pepper and clove, cohesive and quite focused. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, sorbet-like on the entry, quite vibrant with a touch of black pepper towards the finish. Very fine." —Vinous

More about Domaine Hubert Lignier

Hubert Lignier is one of the greatest names in Burgundy. Centered in Morey Saint Denis, but with footholds in several other famous Cote d'Or villages, they make wines that are stylistically very pleasing to today's Burgundy lovers. They are intense and powerful, without sacrificing purity or terroir transparency. They age incredibly well. They are polished and sophisticated. It is a great name for a reason.

The domaine does things the right way--their way--from farming to fermentation to élevage. They practice "sensible combat" (lutte raisonnee) in the vineyards and don't use herbicides. Their wines are organic but not certified. They don't have to be. They don't need to pay some outsider to come in and tell them what to do. They don't give a damn and the wines are proof of their greatness. Use of new oak barrels is low--up to 50% on the Grand Crus Charmes Chambertin and Clos de la Roche.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Rosenthal Wine Merchant

The Ligniers own just under half a hectare of 50-year-old vines in this great premier cru, which sits just above Clos-Saint-Denis on the slope. This vineyard yields a wine of brooding tension, black of fruit and stern, with a rigorous acid profile and real power underpinning it. “Les Chaffots” is unfailingly a profound wine that beckons for some patience, but the purity of fruit is striking here, even in the context of such tight-grained structure.
