Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2022 [NET]

$49999

Les Folatières is Puligny's largest and most famous 1er Cru — a steep mid-slope sweep above the village, on well-drained clay-limestone, where Leflaive farms three biodynamic parcels totaling just over a hectare. Where the 2021 was cool and bracing, 2022 is the warm-but-rescued vintage that gave the Côte de Beaune real concentration: a hot, dry summer broken by well-timed June rain produced ripe fruit balanced by surprisingly subtle acidity. The wine that resulted is fuller, more open and more immediately generous than the '21, while still showing Folatières' signature lift and chalky structure. A Folatières for the present and the cellar both.

"From 3 separate parcels. Once again there is a restrained coolness to the aromas of airy citrus confit, white peach, acacia blossom and a hint of anise. The gorgeously textured and markedly more mineral-driven medium weight flavors also possess a beguiling sense of underlying tension, all wrapped in a very dry but not really especially austere finale that exhibits outstanding length. I very much like the fruit-acid balance and the 2022 Folatières should age gracefully for a decade plus"

Antonio Galloni

"The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has slightly richer fruit than the Clavaillon. Scents of wild honey infuse the citrus fruit, again, with plenty of energy and tension coming through. The palate is nicely balanced with white peach and apricot, a keen thread of acidity, and a very harmonious, lingering and seductive finish. What a beautiful Folatières!" —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières has also turned out very nicely, mingling aromas of pear and orange oil with notions of freshly baked bread, struck match and warm stones. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it's bright and ethereal, with a long, saline finish." —William Kelley

Decanter

"Folatières produced a generous yield in 2022; the result is pleasant and approachable, with ripe apple fruit, floral notes and a touch of spice. It is supple and creamy, with a plump, easy-to-love texture. However, the finished wine lacks the expected concentration and depth. It should drink well young and improve with mid-term ageing, but the structure to age long term is not evident."

Wine Spectator

"A laserlike backbone drives this racy white, along with flavors of lime blossoms, lemon, vanilla and smoky mineral. Clean and incisive, with fine intensity on the long aftertaste of citrus, mineral and baking spices. Drink now through 2032." —Bruce Sanderson

More about Domaine Leflaive

There are many outstanding producers of white Burgundy. When it comes to Puligny Montrachet one name is at the pinnacle - Domaine Leflaive. For many generations of the family and of Burgundy lovers they have been the one you want in your cellar. These are some of the most consistent and long lived white Burgundies from the Bourgogne Blanc, to the Puligny Montrachet, to the premier and grand crus. These are wines you can cellar for many years with complete confidence.

Anne-Claude Leflaive and her right-hand man Pierre Morey were pioneers of biodynamic farming. After seven years of experiments while the property was two-thirds organic and one third biodynamic, all of the vineyards were converted to biodynamic in 1997.

The farming is immaculate, there are constant improvements of the pruning, composting and cultivation of cover crops. Most of the vines were planted in the 1950's and 1980's, the vines are mature. The cellar work is slow and measured, the wines rest for at least two winters in their cold cellars, first in barrel, then in stainless steel tanks for the second winter. There is a maximum of 20% new oak for the premier crus. They are always working to make even greater wines.
