Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Clos des Boucheres Monopole 2020 [NET]

$49999

Clos des Boucheres is Jean-Marc Roulot's monopole, a 1.38-hectare walled parcel on the Meursault hillside, tucked into the slope inside the Bouchères 1er Cru climat (between Goutte d'Or and Porusots). He picked it up in 2011 and it has become his most prestigious bottling, and arguably his most singular: an early-ripening, sun-trapped site that delivers more weight and presence than his other Meursaults, while keeping the laser focus the domaine is known for. 2020 was a warm but balanced vintage, and the result is mesmerizing - dense, layered, with citrus oil, white flowers, and that telltale Roulot salinity running through the spine.

"From a 1.37 ha parcel. Once again, the nose is quite cool and restrained with its array of pretty and elegant acacia blossom, lilac, exotic jasmine tea and lemon-lime hints. The elegance continues on the exquisitely refined medium weight flavors that possess really lovely detail that carries over to the lightly stony, very dry and sneaky long finale. As is almost always the case, this is an understated wine of class and grace that should be approachable young but offer up to a decade's worth of potential improvement."

"The 2020 Meursault Clos des Bouchères 1er Cru has a slightly richer bouquet than its peers, though it is well-defined with subtle oily scents permeating the honeyed fruit. Nuanced, especially following on from the reductive Antoine Jobard. The palate is nicely balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with walnut and smoke developing towards the finish. I appreciate that this has real Meursault DNA and real depth and sapidity. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting." —Neal Martin

"The 2020 Meursault 1er Cru Clos des Bouchères is excellent, exhibiting aromas of citrus oil and pear mingled with notes of fresh bread, dried white flowers and iodine. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, it's ample but precise, with a satiny attack that segues into a vibrant mid-palate, concluding with a long, saline finish. If Les Charmes is denser and blockier, the Clos des Bouchères is finer-boned and more ethereal." —William Kelley

"As with neighbouring Gouttes d'Or, the Clos de Bouchères - a 1.37ha monopole acquired in 2011 - is a precocious, early-ripening site, picked earlier in 2020 than its neighbours, with more potential alcohol (13.65%) and less acidity. Despite the richness, there is a lively character here that makes the wine perhaps more dynamic than its neighbour, even if it doesn't quite reach the depth of Perrières. Roulot vinifies with moderate use of new wood - and his habitual winemaking savvy - to yield an unforgettable wine of charm and distinction."

More about Domaine Roulot

The name Roulot is now a synonym for the very best wine that the village of Meursault can offer. It is rather remarkable when you consider that just 2 generations back the Roulot's were known as producers of Burgundian brandy and eau de vie. But Guy Roulot began leveraging the family's distilling success to purchase small plots of vines in Meursault and by the 1970's was known as a pioneer for producing top quality chardonnay from distinct parcels or ""lieu-dits"".

When Guy passed away unexpectedly in the early '80's his son Jean-Marc was pursuing acting in Paris. In 1989 he returned to take on the reigns of the small Domaine and in the following decades built on his father's success so well that the wines are now extremely hard to acquire and to afford for most of us.
