Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Blanc 2025

$4699

If you want to know what Sancerre actually is, Vacheron's village bottling is the shortest route there. It's a blend of hillside sites around the town, almost evenly divided between flint and limestone, and it includes fruit from plots that also feed the domaine's single-vineyard wines — which is why it tastes like Sancerre rather than merely like Sauvignon Blanc. Cousins Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron farm the entire estate biodynamically, ferment on indigenous yeasts in a mix of stainless steel, cement and wood, raise the wine in large wood, and bottle it unfiltered. 2025 was an early year in the Centre-Loire: budbreak in the first week of April, the driest May and June in over fifteen years, then August heat that gave small, thick-skinned berries before Sauvignon picking began on the 28th, with acidity holding firm. Give it air — this is a wine that expands over the course of an evening, and it takes well to a decanter.

More about Domaine Vacheron

Vacheron is run by two cousins: Jean-Dominique and Jean-Laurent. They've pushed the quality in recent years, converting to biodynamic farming while adding to their portfolio of single-vineyard bottlings. Burgundy is clearly the model for these two, and their best wines operate on a Grand Cru-like level.

The main attractions are their single-vineyard cuvées, which showcase the patchwork of terroir surrounding the town of Sancerre itself. While these wines all posses fascinating differences, they share the Vacheron hallmarks of needle-point precision and an almost overwhelming expression of minerality. They are elegant and age-worthy.

To taste the single-vineyard cuvées of Domaine Vacheron is to experience Sancerre at its absolute apogee – perhaps that of Sauvignon Blanc, too. There are other great producers in the region (the cousins Cotat come to mind, for example), but none explore the fascinating variations of terroir so consistently and convincingly as Vacheron.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Oysters on the half shell, warm goat cheese on toast, grilled sea bass with fennel, sushi, or asparagus with hollandaise.

Tasting Profile

Grapefruit, lemon and white flowers around a flinty, faintly smoky core. Medium-bodied and dry, with firm acidity, real texture and a long stony finish. Opens up considerably with air.
