Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Blanc Les Garennes 2022

$8199

Just over an acre of vines on a steep, full-south hillside high on the slope — Les Garennes is Vacheron's altitude parcel, planted on iron-rich clay and limestone above a subsoil of limestone, silex and Cretaceous marl. The Vacheron cousins farm the whole estate biodynamically, harvest by hand, and ferment on indigenous yeasts in large upright wooden tanks of 25 to 36 hectoliters, then rack the wine back into that same wood for a year before bottling it unfiltered — large wood rather than small barrels, which builds texture without loading the wine with oak. 2022 was hot and dry through a fierce July, but rain arrived just before the early-September harvest and restarted maturation, and the acidity held up far better than the summer suggested it would. Four years on, it has filled out and is drinking beautifully. Sancerre as a wine of place rather than a wine of variety.

More about Domaine Vacheron

Vacheron is run by two cousins: Jean-Dominique and Jean-Laurent. They've pushed the quality in recent years, converting to biodynamic farming while adding to their portfolio of single-vineyard bottlings. Burgundy is clearly the model for these two, and their best wines operate on a Grand Cru-like level.

The main attractions are their single-vineyard cuvées, which showcase the patchwork of terroir surrounding the town of Sancerre itself. While these wines all posses fascinating differences, they share the Vacheron hallmarks of needle-point precision and an almost overwhelming expression of minerality. They are elegant and age-worthy.

To taste the single-vineyard cuvées of Domaine Vacheron is to experience Sancerre at its absolute apogee – perhaps that of Sauvignon Blanc, too. There are other great producers in the region (the cousins Cotat come to mind, for example), but none explore the fascinating variations of terroir so consistently and convincingly as Vacheron.
