Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Blanc Lieu-Dit 2022

$8199

The bridge between Vacheron's village Sancerre and their single-cru bottlings, and probably the best single introduction to what this estate does. Lieu-Dit is an assemblage of named plots rather than one site: Les Romains facing south, Guigne-Chèvres facing northeast and Le Pavé facing east, from vines over forty years old on an estate the family farms biodynamically. Blending across three exposures is the whole point — it gives a wine with more range than any one face of the hill. 2022 brought a hot, dry summer rescued by well-timed rain just before an early-September harvest, producing Sancerre with ripeness and, to nearly everyone's surprise, real acidity. Drinking well now with several good years ahead of it.

"A new blend from Vacheron, the 2022 Les Lieux Dits is a blend of its single vineyards. It is generous and open in style with a succulent texture. It's supple and round, with restrained fruit flavors akin to red apple and some pastry-like lees-derived flavors. The 2022 is a little gentle in terms of acidity."

More about Domaine Vacheron

Vacheron is run by two cousins: Jean-Dominique and Jean-Laurent. They've pushed the quality in recent years, converting to biodynamic farming while adding to their portfolio of single-vineyard bottlings. Burgundy is clearly the model for these two, and their best wines operate on a Grand Cru-like level.

The main attractions are their single-vineyard cuvées, which showcase the patchwork of terroir surrounding the town of Sancerre itself. While these wines all posses fascinating differences, they share the Vacheron hallmarks of needle-point precision and an almost overwhelming expression of minerality. They are elegant and age-worthy.

To taste the single-vineyard cuvées of Domaine Vacheron is to experience Sancerre at its absolute apogee – perhaps that of Sauvignon Blanc, too. There are other great producers in the region (the cousins Cotat come to mind, for example), but none explore the fascinating variations of terroir so consistently and convincingly as Vacheron.
