Our Lady of Guadalupe Red Blend Guero 2025

This is a Gamay-based red made to be served with a slight chill, and everything about how it's made is aimed at keeping it bright and easy. Dave Phinney blends Gamay with Valdiguié and Pinot Noir from several vineyards across California. One of them is his own Our Lady of Guadalupe Vineyard, out at the westernmost edge of the Sta. Rita Hills, which is the only vineyard in the US that he both owns and makes wine from. The 2025 spent eight months in stainless steel with no oak at all and comes in at 13.8%, so nothing stands between you and the fruit. The name is the best part. Phinney's first job in wine, in the late 1990s, was on the harvest nightshift crew at a Napa Valley winery. The crew was mostly Mexican American or from Mexico, and he was the only white guy on it. Once they'd seen how hard he worked, they started calling him "Guero," an affectionate word for someone light-skinned, and old crewmates he runs into still call him that. It's a fun, unfussy red with a real story behind it.

"The 2025 Guero is a new Gamay-based wine aged for eight months in stainless steel, bottled under screwcap and intended to be consumed with a chill. Small amounts of Valdiguié and Pinot Noir are also present. Fleshy, ripe and exuberantly fruity, the 2025 bursts with dark raspberry, lavender, black cherry skin and orange peel. There is a perception of sweetness despite the absence of residual sugar. Charming, crushable and super fresh, this is a perfect porch-pounder." —Billy Norris

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Carnitas or al pastor tacos, grilled bratwurst with mustard, roast chicken with herbes de Provence, a charcuterie board with pâté and cornichons, mushroom and sausage pizza, or grilled salmon with a cherry-tomato salsa. Serve slightly chilled.

Tasting Profile

Expect a bright, juicy red made for a light chill: Gamay's red cherry, raspberry and a little floral lift, with Valdiguié adding darker berry fruit and a peppery edge. Raised in steel with no oak, it should be light to medium-bodied with soft tannins and lively acidity, finishing dry and fresh. Think of a sunnier, Californian take on Beaujolais.
