Acolytes is the front door to Our Lady of Guadalupe: a dry Chardonnay made to introduce drinkers to Santa Barbara County, and a more affordable alternative to the estate OLG bottlings. It isn't a single-vineyard wine. The team blends fruit from several leading vineyards across the county, not just their own, so what you get is a portrait of the appellation rather than of one hillside. The estate is worth knowing about, though. It sits at the far western edge of the Sta. Rita Hills, and Dave Phinney has been making wine from it since summer 2021. It's the only American vineyard he owns and makes wine from. Phinney and his crew (Amy Warnock runs the vineyards, Christopher Hussey is assistant winemaker) say they fell for Santa Barbara County in the early 2010s, convinced that its maritime climate and soils make some of the world's best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Acolytes is the bottle that lets you test that claim without paying estate prices.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with lemon and thyme; pan-seared halibut with beurre blanc; Dungeness crab cakes; shrimp and corn chowder; grilled fish tacos with lime crema.

Tasting Profile

Expect the cool, maritime Santa Barbara County style: lemon, green apple and white peach, with a saline, mineral edge. Typically medium-bodied with bright, lively acidity, it sits between a riper Chablis and a classic buttery California Chardonnay, fresher and leaner than the latter. The finish is dry, clean and citrusy.
