Peay Vineyards West Sonoma Coast Estate Syrah Les Titans 2021

$7499

Andy and Nick Peay farm one of the most remote, weather-beaten estates on the far Sonoma Coast — close enough to the Pacific that ripening is a battle every year, and the vineyards are flanked by towering old-growth redwoods. Those trees are the inspiration for Les Titans, the brothers' high-elevation estate Syrah and one of California's great expressions of the grape. It's cool-climate Syrah at its most uncompromising: dark fruit, a meaty crack of black pepper and bacon fat, and a tight, structured frame that recalls a serious Northern Rhône more than anything Californian. Built to age, rewarding to follow.

Antonio Galloni

97 points

"The 2021 Syrah Estate Les Titans is one of the best wines I have tasted from Peay. Inky dark blue/purplish fruit, gravel, incense, chocolate, licorice, cured meat and blackberry saturate the palate in this dense, explosive Syrah. The 2021 is exceptionally balanced, not to mention so vivid and beautiful." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

93 points

"The 2021 Estate Syrah Les Titans is youthfully coiled and takes plenty of time to unwind in the glass. After several minutes, it reveals scents of blueberry jam, cassis, grilled meats, dried herbs and lavender. The full-bodied palate has concentrated, floral flavors, clay-textured tannins, a bright spine of acidity and a long, detailed and spicy finish. It has the structure and concentration to age very well in bottle." —Erin Brooks

Decanter

97 points

"Les Titans is a wine of feral herbaceousness, ferrous minerality and meaty, briny depths. Truly grown on the climatic edge in Annapolis on the cold West Sonoma Coast. Effusive aromatics spill forth with aromas of wild violets, smoky clove, savory meatiness, briny black olives, and dried herbs. The palate offers pulsing tension and verve. Red currants and tart sour cherries are given over to crushed black stone, smoky soy and chicory root, finishing with white and green peppercorn."

Wine Enthusiast

98 points

"Lifted aromas of concentrated raspberry, violet and anise dominate the nose of this silky textured cool climate Syrah. The palate brings concentrated flavors of blackberry coulis, floral mélange, orange peel and black pepper with seamless tannin-acid integration and a lively, energetic finish that goes on for ages." —Tom R. Capo
