Cebreros, in Ávila province, is the rare village in Spain's Sierra de Gredos where a seam of red slate runs through mountains that are mostly granite, and Granito is Telmo Rodríguez's case for the granite side. He describes the Granito sites as shallow, coarse magmatic granite that drains almost too well. In his telling, the wines from these sites are the fruitier, friendlier side of Pegaso, silkier and more delicate in structure. The house farms organically, from very old bush vines picked by hand into small boxes, and ferments with native yeasts. Telmo found Cebreros in 1999 while walking the Cañadas Reales, the ancient sheep-herding trails, with his father. Back then the village was known only for bulk wine, and he named the project after Pegaso, the Spanish car and truck maker of the 1940s. If mountain Garnacha has already changed how you think about the grape, this is the gentler, more open-armed way in.

"The 2021 Granito is 100% Garnacha from Cebreros in the Sierra de Gredos. It is dark garnet with a purple tinge. The 2021 opens with liqueur notes, ripe black cherry, blackberry, dried flowers, orange peel and herbs. It presents a more vertical style with ample breadth and a ripe core before finishing with fine tannins." —Joaquín Hidalgo

More about Pegaso

The village of Cebreros is one of the Gredos’ most recognizable names, and an appellation in its own right. Famed Spanish winemaker Telmo Rodriguez has a project here, with terroir expert and partner Pablo Eguzkiza. As in Rioja, their goal in Gredos is to return winemaking’s present to its past glory.

Tasting Profile

Expect the bright mountain style of Gredos Garnacha: fragrant raspberry and red cherry, wild herbs and a floral lift, in a light-to-medium body. Granite-grown fruit like this typically gives silky, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity, finishing clean and gently stony. Think closer to Pinot Noir or a cru Beaujolais than to a big, ripe Grenache.
