This is the front door to mountain Garnacha. Telmo Rodríguez calls Zeta the friendliest, most delicate and most approachable of his Sierra de Gredos wines, and it's made from organically farmed bush vines more than 60 years old. The fruit comes from three Cebreros sites, El Robledillo, El Mojón and El Presidente, which sit between 890 and 920 metres. Their soils are shallow, coarse, fast-draining slate and granite over magmatic rock, and Zeta blends fruit from both to play fruit off against structure. Old vines like these fit the mission Rodríguez and Pablo Eguzkiza have followed since 1994: bringing Spain's old, forgotten vineyards back to life. Pegaso, which they founded in 1999, helped launch the careers of many of the best-known names in Gredos. The story goes back to a young Telmo and his father walking the shepherds' trails of central Spain in search of forgotten landscapes. The winemaking is hands-off: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in barrel. More than one taster has called Cebreros wines "mountain Nebbiolo," and this village bottling is an easy, honest way to see why. One practical note: it's 15% alcohol and fined with egg whites, so it isn't vegan.

Robert Parker

"The 2023 Pegaso Zeta is the entry-level village wine from Cebreros, using a mixture of granite and slate soils and mostly purchased grapes from growers. It fermented in used Garbelotto vats with 15% to 20% full clusters and the other half in stainless steel with destemmed grapes with 10- to 15-day macerations, shorter and with a soft extraction, and it matured in the oak vats and in used 400-, 500- and 600-liter barrels and a small part in stainless steel. It has a bright ruby color and a harmonious and elegant nose with notes of flowers, berries and herbs, a medium-bodied palate and fine tannins. It's very approachable, clean and focused."

More about Pegaso

The village of Cebreros is one of the Gredos’ most recognizable names, and an appellation in its own right. Famed Spanish winemaker Telmo Rodriguez has a project here, with terroir expert and partner Pablo Eguzkiza. As in Rioja, their goal in Gredos is to return winemaking’s present to its past glory.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled lamb chops with rosemary, Segovian-style roast suckling pig, wild mushroom rice, grilled chorizo with peppers, or a plate of jamón and aged Manchego.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Gredos mountain Garnacha profile: raspberry, red cherry and wild strawberry, with floral and wild-herb notes and a stony, mineral edge. It's typically light to medium in body, with fine, silky tannins and bright acidity. Think of a delicate Pinot Noir more than a big, jammy Grenache, with a fresh, savoury finish.
