"Pierre-Yves holdings comprise one ancient plot next to Bâtard and another, lower down, from 2009. Lovely lemon and lime colour. Remarkably stylish. Good flesh to this on the palate, excellent reductive tension, white fruit throughout, layered and very long. Drink from 2027-2032." —Allen Meadows

"The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ancegnières has a precise nose of crushed stone and Alpine stream scents, perhaps the most austere of PYCM's Chassagnes. The palate is well balanced with a tropical-tinged nose and pineapple and light guava notes, though the acidity keeps it in check. This is two slightly different wines in one, the nose quite "distant" but the palate "generous." Which one will play out in bottle?" —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"One of the highlights of the range this year is the 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ancegnières, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless wine that evokes aromas of sweet orchard fruit, peach, white flowers and toasted nuts. Suave and layered, with good energy and persistence, it's well worth seeking out." —William Kelley

"Offers ripe pear and floral notes with a hint of oak spice. The texture is silky and rich without being heavy. Colin appreciates the substance here – he is ageing the wine in 50% new wood, just like the Chassagne premiers crus. The grapes are from 0.26ha spread over two parcels, one very old. This is a delicious wine and is among the great values in white Burgundy."

More about Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey became a star for all kinds of reasons.

Partly, it was because he was an early master of a style of white Burgundy that has now become very popular: less oaky (thanks in part to larger barrels), no lees-stirring, earlier picked, a bit more reductive. The aim is not to make the fat wines that were still popular when he was starting out, but rather expressive wines that were chiseled and precise. His wines do all of this so well that he persuaded the rest of us to go along for the ride.

He also became a star because of critical acclaim, and it was the right kind of critical acclaim for the moment. Way back in 2008 Jancis Robinson wrote up PYCM and headlined it: “Making Chassagne more like Riesling”, capturing the style of these wines perfectly. Only Jancis could make a star of Klaus-Peter Keller by comparing his Rieslings to white Burgundy and a star of PYCM by comparing his white Burgundies to Riesling!

But we think he also became a star for a reason that some may overlook: he has long been a champion of Burgundy’s so-called lesser terroirs, and he has been able to make from them incredible wines that can reach a larger audience.
