Weingut Spreitzer Riesling '101' 2022

$1299

“101” is Spreitzer’s introduction to Riesling—and it absolutely nails the brief. Light, juicy, and just off-dry, it’s a wine made to remind you how insanely drinkable great German Riesling can be, without needing a food pairing or a deep cellar.

"Once conceived for the American market as a typical Rheingau Riesling—not too sweet, not too dry—the 2022 Riesling 101 is a blend of the three vineyards: Rosengarten (for softness and power), Lenchen (for fruit and elegance) and Hendelberg (for saltiness and acidity). The grapes for the supposed "bread-and-butter wine" are selectively harvested by hand in several stages with an average must weight of around 88° Oechsle. After whole-cluster pressing, around 75% of the must was fermented in stainless steel and 25% in large wooden barrels. The wine remained on the lees until mid-March and was bottled at the end of March with 14.2 grams per liter residual sugar and 11% stated alcohol. The 2022 offers a quite clear and discreet, mineral rather than fruity bouquet. Round and refined on the palate, this is a lush and elegant, supple but light and filigreed Riesling classic with a very pleasant touch of sweetness. It's easy-drinking, even as a soloist. Screw cap." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Weingut Spreitzer

Brothers Andreas and Bernd Spreitzer have embraced their wealth of resources to produce Rheingau Rieslings of incredible balance, a feat they liken to walking a tightrope. With a generational total of 379 years making wine, the Sprietzers have had plenty of practice.

Even with all the practice, great balance requires great vineyards. The Spreitzers own prime real estate throughout their sub-region of Oestrich, including the Lenchen vineyard and its most famous parcel, Eiserberg. The secret weapon of Lenchen is its series of underground streams, guaranteeing balance even in the hottest years, an asset in this age of climate change.

With these great terroirs and that generations-long attention to balance, the Spreitzer’s achieve some of the most delectable wines in the entire Rheingau, at once beautifully delicate and opulently concentrated.
