Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevery Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux 2007

$19999

Now eighteen years old and drinking beautifully, this is Bachelet's village-favorite 1er Cru in its full mature glory. Les Corbeaux sits just below Mazis-Chambertin on the slope, and Bachelet's bottling has long been a sommelier's secret for serious Gevrey at a sane outlay. The 2007 vintage was always about elegance over weight, and these years in bottle have brought everything into focus — secondary aromas of forest floor and dried roses, fully resolved tannins, and a haunting Pinot perfume. Open and enjoy.

"Moderate wood influence does not really detract from the ripe blue and black pinot fruit that is cut with both plum and violets that are picked up by the extremely rich, velvety and mouth coating big-bodied flavors that possess a seductive mouth feel as the dry extract almost completely buffers the structural elements. This is decidedly more primary than any of the preceding wines and despite the huge extract, it's clear that this is carrying a firm tannic backbone. In sum, this is extremely promising."

"Deep red with ruby highlights. Blackberry, licorice and mint on the nose, along with a medicinal reserve. Dense, sweet and serious, with excellent creamy depth for the year. I like the balance of serious tannins and chocolatey ripeness." —Stephen Tanzer

"Bachelet’s 2007 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corbeaux is tight and bright in a manner not so usual for its vintage – and which Bachelet says reflects post-bottling shut-down – but as far as I am concerned welcome for its sense of energy and promise of potential. Aromas of blackberry, fennel, and peony lead to a palate-staining presentation of dark berries, bittersweet herbal concentrate, and underlying humus and stone. While firm, the tannins here are fine, and there is an incipient sense of silken texture to my tongue. I would expect this to be among those relatively few 2008s that merit consideration for more than a decade of cellaring." —David Schildknecht

More about Domaine Denis Bachelet

Modest - even humble - Denis Bachelet has been working at the family domaine all his life - his first vintage was in 1982. The farming is meticulous, the vines are ancient and the yields are very low. Every single grape is scrutinized. They have striking purity regardless of appellation and can age for a decade or more.
