Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre 2023 [NET]

$20999

Clos de la Barre is the monopole that sits within the walls of Lafon's own cellar in Meursault — quite literally the home vineyard. The clos has its own personality: a bit more chiseled and stony than the village blend, with a stricter line through the middle. Dominique Lafon's hand here is unmistakable: classic Meursault richness shaped by organic, biodynamic farming and long élevage. Among Lafon's lineup, this is the one that most directly expresses the address. A wine of place from one of Burgundy's most revered Chardonnay producers.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Meursault Clos de la Barre has an attractive nose with apple blossom and light peachy scents, notes of beeswax emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with a waxy opening and what seems like a little more extract—more solids toward the finish, with a dash of pepper on the aftertaste. Fine." —Neal Martin

"The 2023 Meursault Clos de la Barre was showing very well, delivering aromas of pear and sweet citrus fruits mingled with white flowers and toasted almonds. Medium to full-bodied, dense and layered, it's satiny and textural, with a structured mid-palate and a penetrating finish. As ever, it's built to reward some bottle age." —William Kelley

"Although 2023 generally lacked acidity, here we have all the tension we want,' says Pierre Lafon. Tasted out of barrel but assembled to resemble the final blend, one could see his reasoning – although there were ripe apple fruit aromas and lush floral notes, there was also noticeable depth and hints of smoke and mineral. The wine was generous but balanced and lingered persistently on the finish. This will drink well young but will continue improving for years in the cellar."

More about Domaine des Comtes Lafon

I remember tasting with Dominique Lafon about 30 years ago in the very cold cellars below Clos de la Barre. We had the reds first, which is Burgundian tradition. Dominique commented that he was having a great time making the red wines and that he thought his reds were getting really good. I had to agree.

He has now retired from Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Lea is the winemaker and Pierre is running the business. Which means Dominique will undoubtedly be spending more time on his wholly owned negociant project. I look forward to drinking the Volnay 1er Cru les Lurets on New Year's Eve 2030!

The négociant wines have taken a big step up with the stunning 2022 and 2023 vintages. The future is looking bright chez Lafon.
