Domaine des Comtes Lafon Puligny-Montrachet 2023 [NET]

$18499

Though Lafon's name is synonymous with Meursault, Dominique also farms vines in neighboring Puligny — and the contrast is illuminating. Where his Meursaults trade in richness and breadth, the Puligny brings cut, tension, and a steelier core. Same hands, same biodynamic ethos, same long élevage — but a different address speaks through the glass. The 2023 is taut and energetic, the kind of Puligny that reminds you why this commune has its own devotees. From undoubtedly one of the world's greatest Chardonnay producers.

"The 2023 Puligny-Montrachet Village has a subtle peachy nose with touches of yellow flowers—quite seductive and actually Meursault-like! The palate is concentrated with notable "fatness," lower in acidity than I expected, with tropical notes on the finish. This is earlier-drinking than the previous vintage but seductive nonetheless." —Neal Martin

"Another small new cuvée for Lafon is the 2023 Puligny-Montrachet, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless white redolent of peach, pear, freshly baked bread and white flowers. With good energy and precision, it's a very pretty wine in the making." —William Kelley

More about Domaine des Comtes Lafon

I remember tasting with Dominique Lafon about 30 years ago in the very cold cellars below Clos de la Barre. We had the reds first, which is Burgundian tradition. Dominique commented that he was having a great time making the red wines and that he thought his reds were getting really good. I had to agree.

He has now retired from Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Lea is the winemaker and Pierre is running the business. Which means Dominique will undoubtedly be spending more time on his wholly owned negociant project. I look forward to drinking the Volnay 1er Cru les Lurets on New Year's Eve 2030!

The négociant wines have taken a big step up with the stunning 2022 and 2023 vintages. The future is looking bright chez Lafon.
