Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 2022 [NET]

$54999

Les Combettes sits at the far northern edge of Puligny, sharing a fence line with Meursault's Charmes — and that border is the whole story. Of all Leflaive's premier crus, this one carries the most Meursault-style flesh and weight while keeping Puligny's mineral cut. The domaine farms 0.73 hectares here, biodynamically, at mid-slope on stony limestone, and the wine that results is broad in the mouth, fragrant with honey and white flowers, and structured to age. In Brice de la Morandière's hands, it is one of the most ageable and complete wines in the Leflaive lineup. A premier cru that drinks with the volume of something grander.

"From a .7 ha holding of 35 to 40-year-old vines. An even more restrained nose grudgingly offers up its aromas of equally cool Granny Smith apple, spice, carnation, acacia and lemongrass nuances. The lilting but almost painfully intense medium-bodied flavors possess a super-sleek and wonderfully refined texture while displaying stunningly good length on the balanced, dry and glossy finish. This is quite simply terrific and a wine that should also amply reward a decade plus of keeping. This effort of 'lace and grace' should be stunning in time."

"The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru, which always suffers millerandage, has a taut, stony, Zen-like bouquet that, at the moment, is less flattering than the Les Folatières. This is going to bide its time. The palate is pretty complex, with a dab of lemon rind, a welcome bitterness and salinity, plus a very intense finish. The 2022 is one for Puligny diehards. I admire its aloofness and uncompromising nature." —Neal Martin

"The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes has been one of the highlights of the range in recent years, and it's often one of the domaine's earliest-ripening parcels. This year's rendition is attractive, exhibiting aromas of pear, orange zest, white flowers and hazelnuts, but the medium-bodied, delicately satiny palate can't quite match the texture and plenitude of recent renditions, lending the wine a somewhat understated, early-picked profile." —William Kelley

"Ripe and fleshy, this white features lemon, lime, green apple, honeysuckle and stone flavors. Turns more focused on the finish, where the acidity converges with a note of lemon. Ends with a long, spicy aftertaste. Best from 2026 through 2033." —Bruce Sanderson

More about Domaine Leflaive

There are many outstanding producers of white Burgundy. When it comes to Puligny Montrachet one name is at the pinnacle - Domaine Leflaive. For many generations of the family and of Burgundy lovers they have been the one you want in your cellar. These are some of the most consistent and long lived white Burgundies from the Bourgogne Blanc, to the Puligny Montrachet, to the premier and grand crus. These are wines you can cellar for many years with complete confidence.

Anne-Claude Leflaive and her right-hand man Pierre Morey were pioneers of biodynamic farming. After seven years of experiments while the property was two-thirds organic and one third biodynamic, all of the vineyards were converted to biodynamic in 1997.

The farming is immaculate, there are constant improvements of the pruning, composting and cultivation of cover crops. Most of the vines were planted in the 1950's and 1980's, the vines are mature. The cellar work is slow and measured, the wines rest for at least two winters in their cold cellars, first in barrel, then in stainless steel tanks for the second winter. There is a maximum of 20% new oak for the premier crus. They are always working to make even greater wines.
