Fratelli Alessandria Barolo Monvigliero 2021

$13999

Rose petals, tangerine peel, and cinnamon burst from the glass, revealing the perfumed splendor of Verduno's most celebrated cru. This south-facing vineyard at 320 meters captures the austere elegance the village is known for, where Nebbiolo sings with aromatic complexity and depth. Medium-bodied yet layered with pomegranate and mint notes, this is a wine built to age but rewarding enough to drink with a few hours of air.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Barolo Monvigliero is one of the best wines I have tasted from Fratelli Alessandria in some time. The aromatics alone are haunting in their beauty. Rose petal, tangerine peel, cinnamon, kirsch, pomegranate and mint explode from the glass. Beams of supporting tannin give the wine its vertical build. This is such a promising Barolo. It could very well turn out to be one of the wines of the vintage." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"Fratelli Alessandria started bottling Monvigliero back in 1978. The 2021 Barolo Monvigliero (with 7,000 bottles released) is a wine of extreme elegance and grace. It shows wild berry, redcurrant, lilac and light spice. Fruit comes from a 1.4-hectare plot with south and southwest exposures on silty limestone soils. There is a pretty note of floral sweetness over polished tannins that makes for a lasting impression." —Monica Larner

Decanter

"Among the most historic estates in Barolo, Fratelli Alessandria is a reference for the village of Verduno. With exactly 1.38ha in Monvigliero, the family has been producing this iconic bottling since 1978. The 2021 boasts a sumptuous and exotic nose of sarsaparilla, sandalwood and rosewater before making way for spicy red berries. Vibrantly lit, it gives an impression of weightlessness while simultaneously demonstrating substantial concentration of pepper-inflected raspberry. Fine-grained tannins are intricately woven into the entire canvas, and it finishes with a mineral tang."

"Showing class and an earthy finesse, the 2021 Monvigliero opens with alluring aromas of eucalyptus, succulent black-skinned fruit, truffle and tobacco. Reflecting the nose, the delicious, enveloping palate delivers layers of ripe black cherry, crushed raspberry, tobacco and licorice before closing on a hint of game. Drink 2029–2041." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Fratelli Alessandria

The small village of Verduno is the home of Pelaverga, but less than a dozen local producers have stayed true to Verduno’s special grape. It’s this sun-bleached hamlet, kissed by the breezes coming off the river Tanaro, that the Alessandria family calls home.

The Alessandria "brothers" have been farming grapes and making Barolo in the ancient village of Verduno since the 1800's. Indeed they and some of their neighbors were among the very first to bottle the dry, complex and age-worthy Nebbiolo that Barolo is now famous for. Today, the actual brothers are Gian Battista and Alessandro, with Alessandro's son Vittore increasingly at the helm, and they work together much the same as their family has for generations.

Farming is crucial: they use organic principles in all of their 30 hectares of vineyards.
