Jacques-Frederic Mugnier Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuees 2022 [NET]

$59999

Frederic Mugnier is one of Burgundy's quiet icons, turning out wines from his tiny Chambolle-Musigny domaine that are famously delicate, perfumed, and "weightless" in texture. Les Fuees sits on the northern edge of the village, directly adjacent to the Bonnes Mares grand cru, and it shows: more mineral, more earthy, more structured than Mugnier's other Chambolles, with a base of darker fruit. The 2022 vintage delivered the rare double of ripe-fruit generosity and classical freshness, and Mugnier's version balances cedar, violets, and pure dark cherry over fine, polished tannins. One of those bottles that vanishes on allocation the moment it lands.

"A slightly more deeply pitched, and more floral-suffused, nose reflects notes of poached plum, anise, lilac and cool exotic tea. The even finer textured middleweight plus flavors exude notably more minerality on the mildly austere, decidedly firm and strikingly long finale. This is terrific and very much worth checking out as well." —Allen Meadows

"The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru is just a little more backward and tertiary on the nose than Mugnier's other cuvées. Touches of ceps and mulch percolate through the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a slight vegetal edge on the entry that comes as a surprise. It has modest depth but I actually prefer the purity of the Chambolle Village on the finish. "The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées exhibits aromas of sweet berries and plums mingled with notions of orange peel, potpourri and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with a deep core of fruit and a suave, seamless profile, it concludes with a sapid, discreetly carnal finish." —William Kelley

"This riveting wine combines everything one might want in a top-flight Chambolle premier cru. There is much ripe mulberry and plum fruit; there is a bit of reduction at this stage, giving the wine a slightly sauvage, gamey note, but there is an impressive minerality and depth to the aroma. The texture is lush but does not lack tannic grip or density. The overall feel is driven strictly by the fruit – there is only one new cask for a total of seven. This wine should open after five to 10 years and drink brilliantly well for decades." —Charles Curtis MW
