Jacques-Frederic Mugnier Musigny Grand Cru 2016 [NET]

$2,99999

Mugnier's Musigny is the crown jewel of the domaine, drawn from around 1.13 hectares in the heart of the Grand Cru — the second-largest holding after Vogüé. 2016 was a brutal year of April frost across Burgundy, but Mugnier's Musigny parcel was largely spared the worst, and the surviving fruit produced a wine of remarkable purity and cool, lifted perfume. The combination of high maturity and bright freshness — usually mutually exclusive — defines the vintage, and here it's translated into a Pinot of striking transparency and floral lift. Pure, perfumed, profound.

"The much more restrained nose is strikingly spicy and offers an extensive range of floral elements on the red and dark berry fruit aromas that are cut with Asian-style tea wisps. The broad-shouldered and concentrated flavors are ultra-refined yet exceptionally powerful and almost painfully intense while offer stunningly good length on the graceful and classy finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This gorgeous but imposingly structured effort indisputably qualifies as a 'wow' wine and is one of the wines of the vintage." —Allen Meadows

"A beautiful floral nose and a wonderful medium-bodied palate belie the difficult birth of this wine, the product of a brutal April frost. Production here was just four barrels, down from an average of 16. But what a wine. Sweet fruit, earthy and spicy notes, this reminds me in some ways of the 14 and is if anything ever more complete. If I used exclamation points, I would use them here. Drink now and for the next fifteen years." —Jay McInerney

"Mugnier's 2016 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is just being released, but readers should take its eight years of cellaring at the domaine as a statement of intent rather than a sign to start pulling corks on reception, as the wine is still very far from maturity. Unwinding in the glass with scents of dark berries, orange rind, exotic spices and a deft framing of new oak, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with a hugely concentrated core of fruit that reflects the year's low yields, lively acids and supple but abundant structuring tannins, it concludes with a long, palate-staining finish." —William Kelley
