Joseph Drouhin Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Amoureuses 2020 [NET]

$64999

Les Amoureuses sits just below Musigny on the Chambolle slope, and to many drinkers it tastes nearly the equal of its Grand Cru neighbor. Joseph Drouhin started as a negociant but has evolved into a true domaine, farming organically since 1990 and biodynamically shortly after. Drouhin owns four parcels here, with vines averaging close to fifty years old. 2020 was a warm, dense vintage, and this Amoureuses shows that concentration in spades: a deep, structured Chambolle with the perfume the cru is famous for, but with serious weight underneath. Still very young, this is a wine to cellar.

"A more elegant, and certainly spicier, combination freely reveals its aromas of rose petal, lavender, violet, exotic tea, kirsch and pretty essence of red pinot fruit scents. The seductive and super-fine, lacy and seductively textured middle weight flavors exude evident minerality on the dusty, chalky and youthfully austere finale that goes on and on. This beauty of an Amoureuses is already terrific and likely to age accordingly." —Allen Meadows

"The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru, which contains around 40% whole bunch, is very well-defined on the nose with brambly red fruit, wilted rose and iris petals, hints of undergrowth, thyme and rosemary emerging with time. The palate is well balanced, sporting a very subtle garrigue-like element that becomes accentuated both on the nose and palate with time. Tender on the finish. Superb." —Neal Martin

"The brilliant 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses wafts from the glass with thrilling aromas of raspberries, bergamot, warm spices, rose petals and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, lively and seamless, it's elegant and fine-boned, with a long, intensely perfumed finish. It's the most ethereal wine in the range this year." —William Kelley

More about Joseph Drouhin

Founded in 1880, Drouhin is generally considered to be the top tier of the larger Maisons in Burgundy. But today it has more land ownership than purchase agreements and acts as a large domaine that occasionally purchases fruit and leases land.

Maurice Drouhin began reducing chemical treatments in the vineyards way back in 1957, and for the past 3 decades now the Drouhins have been converting all their vineyards and fruit sources to biodynamic farming. They are considered leaders in biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy and throughout France.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast squab with morels, duck breast with cherry jus, or aged hard cheeses (Comte, aged Gouda). Decant if drinking young.

Tasting Profile

Deep red and dark berry fruit, rose petal, warm spice, and forest floor. Concentrated and structured but framed by classic Chambolle perfume, with fine-grained tannins and a long, mineral finish.
