Marc Hebrart Champagne Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru Brut Clos Leon 2015

$17999

Clos Leon is a tiny walled vineyard in Dizy that Jean-Paul Hebrart has spent two decades trying to put back together. The clos was historically divided into three parcels totaling just 0.81 hectares; he sourced fruit from all three for years before finally acquiring the first parcel in 2008, the second in 2016, and the last in 2021. The 2015 is 100% Chardonnay fermented in 228-liter oak barrels at a very cool 12 degrees, with no malolactic, 72 months on lees, and only 3 grams of dosage. The result is a serious, wine-forward Champagne with the depth of a fine white Burgundy and the cut of a great grower bubbly. Disgorged January 2022.

"The 2015 Brut Clos Le Léon, 100% Chardonnay from the Le Léon lieu-dit in Dizy, stands apart from the rest of the wines in the range because of its focus on Chardonnay. Here, too, Hébrart has done a commendable job capturing the best 2015 had to offer while avoiding the year's pitfalls. That's a pretty admirable achievement in my book. There is a bit of dryness that appears at the very tail end of the finish, but that is not enough to detract from all the 2015 has to offer, which is, namely, a pretty, structured, ample style of Chardonnay that emphasizes savory and mineral notes more than anything else. Dosage is 3 grams per liter." —Antonio Galloni

More about Marc Hebrart

Hébrart has holdings in a number of top sites in both the Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs but is a specialist in the great village of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, where you find top spots like the Clos des Goisses and Selosse’s Sous le Mont.

When he blends his top cuvées, he has a lot of great source material to choose from but even Hébrart’s entry-level wines are pitched absolutely perfectly for Thursday. They're elegant and complex, and will elevate any dish. But they're not flashy or over the top: more supporting players than showboaters.
"Hébrart’s wines have a broad appeal: if you like to think about your wines, they're intellectually engaging enough to satisfy you; on the other hand, if you're just looking to drink, they're simply delicious." - Peter Liem, Champagne Guide

Tasting Profile

Deep and structured with baked apple, brioche, hazelnut, and chalk. Fine bead, low dosage, long saline finish. Drinks like a great white Burgundy with bubbles.
