A Grand Cru Riesling from granite with more than a decade in bottle already, and mature Alsace like this rarely turns up on a shop shelf. Wineck-Schlossberg rises above the villages of Katzenthal and Ammerschwihr at 280 to 400 meters. The slope faces south to south-east and is sheltered from the prevailing winds, and its decomposed granite makes light, mineral-rich soils that ripen grapes early. The Adam family calls it the terroir of Riesling, which they consider the king of Alsace wines. They've made wine in Ammerschwihr for more than 400 years and came through the Thirty Years War, the Revolution, both World Wars, and Alsace's annexation by Germany and return to France. A few of them were elected mayor along the way. Jean-Baptiste Adam went biodynamic in 2003, picks everything by hand, ferments with native yeasts and keeps only the heart of the pressing. This 2011 is a bottle for anyone curious what granite Riesling turns into with time.

"Bright yellow. Pungent aromas of pineapple, minerals and mint. Rich and classically dry, with citrus and wet stone flavors complemented by a repeating minty nuance. This ought to age well." —Ian D'Agata

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Trout au bleu, pike-perch on sauerkraut, pan-roasted halibut with beurre blanc, choucroute garnie, or roast chicken with morels and cream.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic profile of dry Alsace Riesling grown on granite: citrus, white peach and a stony, mineral edge, with firm, bright acidity and a fuller body than most German Riesling. With bottle age, the style typically picks up honeyed, toasty and petrol-tinged notes, finishing long, dry and saline.
