This is dry Grand Cru Riesling from old vines: Jean-Baptiste Adam's Kaefferkopf plantings date to 1955 and 1956, on the granite hillside of Ammerschwihr. The site is Alsace's 51st Grand Cru, but its name goes back much further. It first appears in the land register of the Abbey of Pairis in 1338. The slopes face east on the sub-Vosges hills at 240 to 320 meters and are mostly granite, with limestone mixed in. A strong foehn effect, the warm, dry wind that drops off the mountains, gives Ammerschwihr its own microclimate, especially in spring and autumn. Jean-Baptiste took over from his father, Jean-Marie, in 1996 and converted the vineyards to biodynamics in 2003, with Demeter certification since 2007. His daughter Laure is the 15th generation. The house counts this cuvée among its top wines and calls it a large, dry, powerful and complex Riesling. Dry Alsace Grand Cru Riesling is still one of the more underrated categories in white wine, and old vines from a family that has farmed this hill for generations are a good place to start.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Choucroute garnie; roast pork loin with apples; pike-perch or trout in a Riesling cream sauce; roast chicken with morels; tarte flambée.

Tasting Profile

Expect the full, dry style of Alsace Grand Cru Riesling: lemon, lime and white peach with a smoky, flinty edge typical of granite soils. Old vines bring concentration and a broad, powerful palate, kept taut by firm, bright acidity. The finish is long, dry and mineral; think fuller-bodied and drier than most German Riesling, and built to age.
