This is dry Grand Cru Riesling grown on granite, from the vineyard Jean-Baptiste Adam calls the terroir of Riesling, "the king of Alsatian wines." Alsace Grand Cru is still one of the best-value corners of serious white wine. Wineck-Schlossberg lies in Katzenthal and Ammerschwihr, on south- and southeast-facing slopes, 280 to 400 meters up. Its decomposed two-mica granite makes light, mineral-rich soils that ripen grapes early, and these particular vines were planted in 1976. The 2018 is certified biodynamic and organic. It was hand-harvested, whole-cluster pressed and fermented in stainless steel, then spent 8–12 months in century-old French oak casks and another 18 months in bottle before release. Jean-Baptiste took over from his father Jean-Marie in 1996 and converted to biodynamics in 2003. His daughter Laure is the 15th generation of a family that has been making wine in Ammerschwihr since 1614. It's fresh and lively enough to drink now, and the family says it will age for up to 10 years. Serve it cellar-cool (10–12°C) rather than fridge-cold.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

The Adam family's own picks are classic Alsace dishes: trout au bleu, or pike-perch (zander) on a bed of sauerkraut. It also works with grilled river trout with brown butter and lemon, choucroute garnie with smoked fish, seared scallops with citrus, or Thai-style steamed fish with lemongrass and ginger.

Tasting Profile

Light yellow with golden glints. The nose opens with citrus peel and pink grapefruit, then violet and candied tropical fruit. Dry and powerful but supple in the mouth, with fine citrus flavors and acidity that stays slightly in the background. There's a hint of iodine and white spice, and it finishes on lemon zest.
