Jean-Baptiste Adam says its Letzenberg Pinot Gris is made to last, calling it powerful, opulent and unusually long-lived. This 2011 lets you test that claim without cellaring a bottle yourself for more than a decade. Letzenberg is a single hillside vineyard at about 300 meters, overlooking Ingersheim near Ammerschwihr. The Adams describe heavy red marl-clay-limestone soil over sandstone and limestone pebbles. The Pinot Gris vines were planted in 1985 and cover just 2.2 acres. Jean-Baptiste Adam took over from his father Jean-Marie in 1996, so this vintage was made on his watch, and his daughter Laure is now the 15th generation in the business. Alsace Pinot Gris with some age on it is one of the most food-friendly whites in France, so open it with dinner rather than saving it for a special occasion.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Seared or terrine of foie gras; a cassolette of snails with morels; sweet-and-savoury dishes like duck with apricots or pork with caramelized apples; mirabelle plum or apricot tart.

Tasting Profile

Expect the rich, rounded style of Alsace Pinot Gris: ripe pear, yellow plum and apricot with a smoky, spicy edge, turning toward honey and dried fruit with age. The body is full and opulent, with a gentle off-dry sweetness balanced by fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish. Think a world away from light, crisp Pinot Grigio.
